Cagney and Lenox Hill Neighborhood House

James Cagney and his brothers all attended our after school programs in the early 1900s, where they were first introduced to the theater. While his brothers acted and directed, James was initially content to work behind the scenes. One night his brother Harry became ill and was unable to perform. James’s photographic memory of the rehearsals allowed him to flawlessly step into his brother’s role and thus began his performance career right here on the Lenox Hill Neighborhood House stage.

Support the future Cagneys in our RealArts After School and Summer Camp!

The video below, produced by New York Live, explores Cagney’s rise to the top and features his start at the Neighborhood House. Join us at the Film Festival for Cagney’s triumphant return to our stage!
